AI is transforming the way we plan travel. It can build itineraries, compare hotels, suggest destinations and process huge amounts of information in seconds. But travel is not always as predictable as an algorithm suggests. Bulgarian tour guide Adriana Vassilkova highlights the gap between digital expectations and reality: “Driving times are often not the same as shown in AI or even Google Maps… when crossing from a non-EU to an EU country, such as the Serbian-Bulgarian border…” AI can calculate a route, but it may not know about border queues, changing road conditions, local customs or the unexpected realities of traveling through a destination. And that is where human expertise still matters. As Sarah Jones, VP of Sales, Marketing & Tourism Development at Visit Hickory NC, explains: “Hospitality is more than a bulleted itinerary; it is the people you impact and interact with at a destination’s restaurants, attractions, and lodging partners.” When things go wrong, the difference becomes even clearer. Emma Harrison, Marketing Manager at Blue Skies Lifestyle, puts it simply: “When something goes wrong, travelers do not want more options. They want someone who takes ownership and fixes it.” 🤝 The future: AI + human expertiseAI is excellent at research, comparison and organization. Humans remain essential for judgment, local knowledge, personalization and problem-solving. For the tourism industry, the opportunity isn’t to choose between AI and people—but to combine their strengths. AI can plan the journey. Humans make the journey memorable. |
